Today in 1733 John Peter Zenger published his first issue of the
New York Weekly Journal
. Zenger is remembered for his being indicted, tried, and acquitted of libel and sedition against William Cosby, then governer of the New York Colony. The trial was a landmark for its defense of freedom of the press, a freedom that now seems to be under attack from so many quarters in the United States and nonexistent in many other countries.
